悲剧维度是英国作家托马斯·哈代小说最重要的维度之一。对于主人公悲剧根源的探索有助于研究哈代小说的思想内涵及其历史意义。哈代小说主人公的悲剧根源（即他们的灾难性结局的根源）可以从文化角度来阐释。在雷蒙·威廉斯文化唯物主义理论的基础上，个体性文化体系的合度与失度之阐释框架可以发展出来，用于托马斯·哈代小说主人公悲剧根源的研究。在一定意义上，个体性文化体系的失度（简称为文化失度）导致了小说主人公的灾难性结局。该专著从个体性文化体系的失度的视角研究哈代悲剧，可以对现代性发展过程中的道德、性格、身份和价值观等诸多维度给予阐释。

刘磊，男，1982年出生，中国民航大学外国语学院副教授，上海外国语大学英语语言文学专业博士。主要研究方向为英美文学与文学理论。近年主要学术论著：《英美文学中人文情结的嬗变》；《美国“垮掉派”诗歌研究——认知诗学视阈》[第二作者]。现阶段主讲或曾经主讲“大学英语”、“高级英语”、“中西文化比较”、“基础英语写作与交流”（博士生公共英语）等课程。
